Full Article
It is generally acknowledged that, when you get a new job, you have 100 days to demonstrate to employers, colleagues and other stakeholders that you are indeed the best person for the position. This is a magical period during which you can afford to take more risk than you normally would. This is a good time to rock the boat – wisely. You are most unlikely to get fired during the first 100 days as by doing so the people who gave you the job would publicly admit that they made the wrong choice.
100 days may sound like plenty if your new job is the result of an internal promotion. If you are a newcomer to the organisation, it is frightfully short. Anyhow, it is all you have. You had better make the most of it. 40% of people promoted leave the company within 18 months and the last thing you want is to become an illustration of Peter’s Principle.
You will set the tone on how others perceive you and the impact you may have on their professional lives. This short article does not pretend to provide a comprehensive programme. It is merely an appetiser for what can be done to ensure success in your new position. Here are a few to-dos that will point you in the right direction:
• Acquire knowledge of your environment. This is particularly critical if you come as an outsider and should preferably be done before you accept the position.
o What counts around here? What is the culture?
o Who are the stakeholders? What are the critical alliances that you must form? Not only in your team but 360 degrees around you. Any potential enemy to be converted?
• Ensure that expectations and deliverables are clearly defined.
• A golden rule for any change is not to lose or destroy what is good; rather enhance it. Be determined, yet flexible in applying good ideas from others.
• Communicate – a lot. One-on-one conversations usually work best because it gives the opportunity to listen to your interlocutor. Make your agenda unequivocal.
• Reinforce your team. This includes the willing, the undecided and the toxic. Do not forget the ones who have been passed over (probably by you!) and the ones who did not get along too well with the previous administration but have great potential nevertheless.
• Get some early wins. If it were only to prove to the sceptics that something has changed for the better. Celebrate but without losing sight of your long term objective.
• Manage your own boss. Never underestimate the power of a happy boss.
• And, last but not least, pace yourself. Not much point in winning the first 100 days if your exhaustion makes you lose the rest of the race.
There is ample literature on this subject. Please talk to us. We would be happy to recommend some great books or a more hands-on intervention to assist you in your challenges.
