On World Teachers Day, Hirsch’s BOKSBURG popped down to Kids Haven in Benoni to thank the teachers and the helpers for the great work they do for the children, with a coffee and muffin treat. Kids Haven was opened in Benoni in 1992 and today they have 39 Girls and 42 Boys at their premises. The haven was started to help get the growing number of street children off the streets.
Commented Hirsch’s Jennylee McDonald, “It’s these wonderful individuals that take the street children in and teach them how to work together. Some of the children have never been taught basic hygiene or social skills. Kids Haven helps with all of this. Vincent Maloleke said “You have to have a passion for this job. You have to have compassion as well. A lot of the children that come here have a lot of anger and you have to know how to deal with these issues.” The teachers here go through extensive training to deal with the different type of situation the children come from. But while we were at Kids Haven the teachers were friendly and you could see the passion they have for what they do. Lucky Bhembe said “ You can’t let this job get you down. You have to be positive and that will show the children that the future is bright.”
