Business man and legendary Springbok and Sharks rugby player, Wayne Fyvie, was guest speaker at Hirsch Hillcrests monthly networking breakfast last Thursday and gave the audience some interesting feedback on how his rugby career has influenced who is today and how it has helped him create a successful business. Wayne brought a fantastic atmosphere into the room breaking the ice by telling a few jokes.
Wayne, who played the position of flank for both the South African and Sharks rugby team elaborated on topics like – Reasons for who and what you are; always have a plan; set goals and work for them; have a mentor and a role model that you look up to and allow that person to guide you.
Something else that caught everyone’s attention was the quote “When you fall you have a choice”. Said Wayne, “when you fall you can choose to use the experience, the emotion and the disappointment to break you or you can choose to use the experience to allow yourself to grow emotionally and mentally and to learn and make the most of a situation. Wayne used the time when he was not selected to represent the Sharks; he said that this was the first time he had been ‘rejected’. He also focused on the time when he was in the SA team with another member who sadly took his own life. Wayne was then informed that even though he was a flank player he would now be playing another position. He didn’t say “I’m too small, too short, too light” instead, he chose to make the most of the experience and allow others to make the decision that he was better in his previous position. Wayne chose to make the most of the experience which allowed him to grow and become a better player.
Also at the breakfast was Nadine Wright who spoke on Focus on Ithemba, giving the crowd a clear breakdown on the school and how they can help. Focus on Ithemba – Place of hope provides quality foster care homes for vulnerable children and a school of excellence for our children and the greater community. Located in Kwazulu Natal on the boarder of the Inanda valley, Ithemba is an accredited non-profit, public benefit organization restoring hope in people’s lives.
All the guests left the meeting feeling enlightened and full of energy and enthusiasm for the rest of the week. This is our aim, to give back to other businesses said Sarah Brauns, Hillcrest Hirschs PRO
