The vision of the Mahala Gym© project, is to make the outdoor workout experience accessible to every individual and every family - we want to see free outdoor gyms scattered all over the country to give an opportunity for EVERYONE to exercise free of charge, regardless of economic status or location.
South Africa is the third fattest nation on earth and lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart diseases and obesity are hitting our communities hard. We are going for a national health insurance (NHI) program and we need to find solutions as the burden from an obese nation on this system is unthinkable. Today, we all realize that fitness behavior and an active lifestyle are vital to improved health, longevity and the enjoyment of life. Yet, people become increasingly inactive which leads to health and crisis due to declining fitness levels and growing rates of obesity, even among our youth. The biggest obstacles remain personal motivation and available opportunities. Outdoor Fitness Equipment is an important part of the solution as it will be in the heart of every community open 24 hours a day and most important free of charge! Working out on exercise equipment in the open air is a unique experience that in addition provides a way to stay fit, shapes a healthy community and helps to curb crime within the youth through sport. Our fitness equipment is designed for all fitness levels from beginners to advanced users as you apply your own body weight when exercising. It’s colorful and vibrant appearance is very inviting and not intimidating like indoor fitness equipment in a conventional gym. The outdoor gym is a very cost effective, eco-friendly, doesn’t require electricity and there is ZERO maintenance once it is installed, so there isn’t extra cost after installation. It is also a green product and made from recycled materials.
In October 2011 we finished installing our first fitness park in OR Tambo Environmental & Narrative Centre for the Ekurhuleni municipality; the residents of the surrounding area are using the gym daily, from kids to the elderly. We are so happy to see this change driving this community to lead a healthier lifestyle.
