Pensioners of Dawncliffe Retirement Village chose to celebrate National Vegetarian month by inviting Sarah Brauns on behalf of Margaret Hirsch to introduce and discuss Margaret’s latest cook book “Living the modern vegetarian life” Sarah spoke to the Pensioners on the History of Hirsch’s and where the company is today. The history of Hirsch’s plays a huge role in how the famous Hirsch cookbooks came about said Sarah. When Margaret and Allan Hirsch first started the company in 1979 in Umhlanga Rocks Drive they decided to bring in a Microwave. In order to support and promote this product Margaret decided to start a cookery school and slowly and gradually over time was able to collect and file different recipes that were brought in by individuals who used these reliable and easy to use recipes in their own kitchens. After time, enough recipes were collected and published to create a whopper of a cook book called “At home with Hirschs” Margaret is also the successful author of the first original microwave cookery school book and the food processor cookbook. What has been decided now is to get the rest of the family to create cookbooks that are relevant to their current lives. Luci Hirsch who is the mother of two beautiful boys and the head of PR for the Hirsch group will be creating a book called and for “Mums on the run”. Richard Hirsch, MD for Hirschs and recently married will be focusing on and calling his book “Cooking for one and two” and Allan Hirsch will be creating a book specifically for “Healthy Cooking” as he himself is very into healthy cooking and eating. This is all very exciting, the best thing about all the books, current and future ones is that all the recipes have and will be designed to accommodate any household, keeping ingredients simple and preparation time quick said Sarah. As Margaret Hirsch has always said “A family that eats together, stays together”. Happy cooking.
