Estate Agents from throughout the Upper Highway gathered at Hirsch’s in Hillcrest for a very informative talk on the New Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy that has recently been enforced. The new policy sparked a lot of interest as there have been some grey areas regarding the laws that have been set. The policy states that Landlords may not put the water and electricity in the name of the renting tenant. Water and Electricity has to be kept in the owner’s name and the tenant needs to be billed separately. This is obviously raising a few concerns and questions amongst Agents and Landlords alike. Guest Speakers from KZN and the Upper Highway who were present at this well attended breakfast, covered all the necessary topics that would be relevant to the Agents. Guest Speaker Fatima Khan who represented the Municipality spoke on the New Credit Control & Debt Collection Policy (Residential) @ 1 July 2012. She was followed by a Mary-Ann Le Roux from netVendor, a local business based in the Upper Highway who spoke about Prepaid Water & Electricity Solutions. Mary – Ann came forward with some excellent solutions towards the difficult tenant and landlord issue, giving some hope to those concerned going forward. She was followed by Gareth Brimelow, a representative from Morris Fuller Walden Williams (Attorneys/Conveyances) who spoke on the PIE Act, Residential Letting & the CPA.
