To celebrate Sandton City’s 40th Birthday and Sunday Times Food Weekly’s 2nd Birthday, South Africa’s most iconic shopping centre teamed up with the Sunday Times,Walnut Grove, Checkers Hyper, The Sandton Sun Hotel and Hirsch’s to host the Best Chocolate Cake Competition!!!!
6 Finalists from all over SA were chosen out of 500 Entries and flown to JHB to Celebrate this momentous occasion and battle it out In the Checkers court at Sandton City! “Readers of the Sunday Times and Sandton City were encouraged to send in their original chocolate cake recipes and give a reason why they believed it was the best-tasting chocolate cake. The top 20 recipes were tried and tested by Hilary Biller, the Sunday Times Food Weekly’s food editor”, where the 6 finalists were chosen.
While the contestants were baking up a storm and catching the eyes of many shoppers, three VETERAN chefs from the South African Chefs Association; Heinz Brunner, Manfred Reinhart and Fritz Flatscher made the world’s tallest sacher-torte which was shared with Everyone at the Event, including the shoppers. The cake cutting ceremony was lead by a celebrity Guest and very popular artist, Kahn Morbee, of the Parlotones!
The winner of the Best Chocolate Cake was Simone De Meillon who received R10 000 cash and a R10 000 Hirsch’s voucher AND a R15.000 Elba Gas Cooker with her delicious Flake Cake. Second Place went to Emma Van Zyl of Cape Town and Third Place went to Gabriella, Also from Cape town!
