Yesterday afternoon, myself and Megan McClean from Caxton, went to the home of Moyra Robinson, from Grace Community Church. As many of you may know, Hirsch Fourways and Caxton kicked off with our Champion of the Month this month. We had such a wonderful response from the community and such amazing and inspiring stories came through that we really had a difficult time choosing the winning story. However, Wednesday afternoon, Moira Robbinson’s story came through and she was the decided winner.
‘About six years ago children from the Diepsloot squatter camp started arriving at our church in Broadacres.
After a few weeks, the number grew and grew, and we decided to open a sunday school.
We have 120 children attending each week, ranging in age from 3 – 19 years,
The pre teens meet separately at the back of the church, where we sing, dance, have a bible story, and do a craft each week.
We also instill “manners'” and “hygiene”.
We try and make this a learning time – full of fun and laughter.
We have had 7 laptops donated – and during the sunday school period 14 children will learn some basic computer skills and watch a bible story on the computer.
The teens have a separate teacher in a separate room where the lessons are geared to their ages.
Before going home everyone receives a hot dog, juice, and a fruit.
We order our sliced hot dog rolls from Pick n Pay Douglasdale and collect every sunday morning early.
We have noticed how the childrens skills have developed using scissors etc
We also get the older children coming back to visit from time to time.’
Yesterday, Megan and myself met Moyra and gave her the winning voucher. She was absolutely thrilled and very emotional, as she told us what she what she would do with the voucher. Moyra is really such a wonderful and passionate person that one can’t help but feel truly motivated and inspired by her story.
