A noble endeavour Keywords: advice, programming, software development
Greetings
If you cannot move from your location, then you need to think of projects that are going to allow you to gain some experience. Why not create a small web-based application and host it cheaply in SA. Try and get friends and family to use it. Once you can show a potential employer something, then you have a step in the right direction.
I think it is commendable that you want to live where you are happy, that is something you need to hold onto. The world has changed and you don't need to work at an office any more. However, one word of caution... If you work from home, treat your day as if you are at an office. I have worked from home for the last few years, and still have a definite start and end time to office hours.
As far as development goes, look at other programming languages. This site was built on PHP. PHP is very easy to learn and there are endless resources and tutorials on line to help you.
Hope some of this advice helps

At last a spark!! Keywords: New to Programming
Thank you , Brent, for your effort of turning your light at my dark despair.
I really wish my being where I am was an act of nobility or some sort of patriotism. The truth is that I have no choice.
May be I should tell you how I ended up creating programs. Visual Basic.NET is the only thing in my life that I found to be worthwhile after losing my job of ten years. All those ten years I was a production machine operator. You see, not in an office. I only learned Visual basic.NET by correspondence together with courses such as Operations Management. After losing my job I tried very hard to find anything that might put something on the table, well in my case a table is a serious luxery. The thing I couldn't find even a cleaning or gardening job.
When I set down to evaluate the worth I accumulated since the day I was born, I realised that programming is the only thing that set me apart from my fellow villagers. But it does not have any financial benefit.
I need to explore your advice about hosting. I will search the net to find out how it generates any for of income. But if anyone can help me understand it better, please, help

A challenge Keywords: programming
Take a one day, one program challenge. Whereby you program some piece of code each (possible). One day you could combine all those pieces or at least the knowledge thereof to make a great and big project. We succeed because we learn everyday.
I learned VB.NET first, then soon propelled to C and Java. You will never know where the world takes you because now I develop in PHP. One lesson I have learnt is that its perhaps not the language that matters because those are just tools, but what you want to achieve - and your imagination is key here. The world of programming to too open and free, explore it with strong will and one day you will be able to do anything.
Experiment as much as possible - money will follow. I live by these words everyday :).
