Social Media - Where does the battle start? How do I start to implement technologies like Twitter, Facebook etc...
I'm starting to work on a Social Media Policy, for my current company, which I then can implement for our client's.
Also another hurdle I have to face is to analyze the target company and determine if a social media option would be beneficial to their marketing plan and if it would build their user base or at least create a stronger interaction with the users.
What do you think is the best entry point to start working on Social Media?

I think that you need to start by developing a strategy for social media releases. For example, twitter is not really the place to be in social media if you are a South African company, as most people are twitter illiterate.
Facebook is a great place to start a campaign, however, you need to realise that people are there for social networking, and not for business networking. Most people do not follow companies on Facebook for one reason: They are there for fun and friends.
So if you start a facebook campaign, make sure that your strategy is fun, informative and unobtrusive. Ask questions, post photos, research your links thoroughly.
Have a look at different companies and their approaches.

Reply to: Social Media - Where does the battle start? The best way to start a social media campaign is to listen at the buzz. Did a short blog post on this a while ago - http://blog.wsioms.co.za/index.php/social-media-marketing/how-to-start-your-social-media-marketing-campaign-listen-at-the-buzz/

I am definitely going to try Google alerts Anton, that is a great tip, thanks. Google also has an interesting application on their search page called updates. I often use this to follow twitter trends and other interesting topics on social media though, but I think this is flooded with tweets more than any other content.

Reply to: Social Media - Where does the battle start? Hi Jaco,
Your challenge when implementing a social media is three-fold:
1. Clutter: We are living in a very noisy world. And we are all competing for attention. When you want to attract people to come to your blog/facebook fan page/follow your twitter feed - so do a million other companies and individuals. The biggest mistake companies make is assuming that people actually care about them, and are interested in following and tracking them online. Not true! I don't want to be sold to in my social space... But I do want to be engaged and entertained... and that is the challenge. Check out how old spice got it right.
2.Quality: Because of the amazing choice and endless possibilities of social media, we are becoming very very very picky. If you bore me on twitter, I'm going to stop following you. If your webpage doesnt load quickly or is clunky and hard to navigate - I'm outta there pal! However, when the writing is gripping, the graphics are crisp and I am "discovering" your product or company - then it is an experience I will enjoy and remember. Don't broadcast to me - dont talk down to me - I am looking for a serendipitous experience - not an online advertising channel.
3. Engagement: Involve me in your product development. Give me a say in designing or critiquing your new logo. Allow me to chat with your MD. The words to remember when implementing your social media engagement strategy is "With" and "For" - and forget "At" and "To".
Those are my thoughts on the matter. Check out Seth Godin - he has quite a few e-books for free to help you out more!
Out.
